One of the downsides to having your music in the cloud is, well, getting your music off the cloud. Gramofon is built to be a cloud-based jukebox that pulls all your music from the cloud.
Stripped Down
Of course, since it doesn’t have to hold a lot of physical media, Gramofon is actually pretty tiny. And it’s also a fairly smart design. First of all, it comes with a WiFi booster built into it, so, after you connect it to your WiFi, you don’t have to worry about changing it from a song you can’t stand while wandering around the house. Secondly, it’s built with as few moving parts as possible, most notably the lack of a remote.
Phone Control
Instead, you connect to Gramofon using your smartphone. Android or iOS will do, as long as it can receive WiFi. Then it’s really just a matter of picking a Spotify playlist, or using WahWah. Rhapsody is also supported, and the team is working on adding more services as you read this. Pretty much all you have to do is connect this to a set of speakers and you’re ready to go. An API is in the works, of course, but for now, you’ll have to make do with this support.
The Virtual Jukebox
There are some features we’d like to see added before this thing ships. The most glaring omission would seem to be that you can’t stream music from a dedicated hard drive or NAS storage system. But that’s a relatively minor problem, considering just about everything else can do that, and they’re working on including support for such a feature before it ships. So, if you want control over your music streaming, this is an elegant solution, especially at the price: You’ll pay just $60 to get control of the streams.
